Weight Loss Wednesday – My Favourite @SlimmingWorld Houmous

Hello My Lovely Followers,

And here we are again another Weight Loss Wednesday. How was your week? Last week I told you that breaking the habits that I allowed to grow over the Christmas period was turning out to be harder than I had expected. I needed to get more organised, I used the Slimming World recipe books, app and the online site to help me.

My plans have been well and truly scuppered! I’ve been fighting off a cold this week (who hasn’t) and lost my voice. Was it coincidence or something more nefarious that our science lesson this week was teaching our pupils all about sound!? Yes, that was a fun lesson without my voice. Lol!

The good news is that although I didn’t stay to our group’s THERAPY session tonight, the scales rewarded my renewed determination and confirmed that I am 2lbs lighter this week! Woo!Hoo! Our group’s consultant, Carol, said she was so proud of me. I know that it’s her constant motivation, tips and support that keep me (and the rest of the members in the group) going.

This week, I decided to use my blog to share some of my favourite Slimming World recipes and meals with you in the hopes that it will not only keep me focused but may be of help if you are on a health and fitness journey too.

When I first joined Slimming World back in August 2017, I used to always have a pot of their Speedy Houmous in my fridge to help with my snacking! I started making it again a couple of weeks ago, it really has helped me and it’s one of the easiest things to make!

Here’s the recipe copied from the Slimming World website.

Whip up a batch of basic Free houmous – and jazz it up with your favourite Free flavours.

ingredients

  • 400g can chickpeas, drained
  • 2 garlic clove, crushed
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice, plus extra to taste
  • 2 tbsp fat free natural Greek yogurt (Actually, I use plain Quark instead – it increases my protein intake and makes for a creamier thicker houmous)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of smoked paprika or cayenne pepper (optional)

method

  1. Put the chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice and yogurt into a food processor and pulse until fairly smooth. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, add more lemon juice to taste and sprinkle with smoked paprika or cayenne pepper if you want a bit of extra spice.
  2. Keep in the fridge for up to 3 days and serve with your favourite crudités or crispbreads.

See? This recipe is sooo simple anyone can make it. I would love to hear from you if you do. Just leave a comment below.

I’m off to find another of my go-to Slimming World recipes that I can share with you next time. I hope you have a great week.

SoCS – doesn’t everybody’s DMV serve up a menopause primer with license renewals?

This post is not only bloody hilarious but sadly so true. Although I am (luckily) still in possession of a full head of thick brunette (mostly) hair, I am continually plucking where no lady wants (or expects) to pluck.

Thanks Laura for posting this. I’m sure my followers will chuckle (and maybe relate) too. 😂

Riddle from the Middle

Lobbing “hairy” as a prompt at someone with middle school age kids is almost too easy. The jokes practically write themselves, am I right? Huh? Huh?

Lobbing “hairy” as a prompt at someone who’s in some kind of twilight period of impending hot flash doom is also almost too easy. The jokes definitely write themselves.

Lucky for you I renewed my driver’s license this week.

Hey, did you know Congress passed the REAL ID Act way back in 2005? Yeah, seems so, because renewing my license this year entailed more than scary photo ops and random vision tests. There was research and document prep and a very real chance I’d need to do a DNA test on site.

Just kidding about that last part. But you gotta admit it’s a little worrisome that you hesitated.

Anyway, it was right after Hurricane Florence when I realized my license expires in January…

Superfoods For The Menopause

Hello Lovely Followers,

So, here I am again posting something about the menopause – I know it’s been a while!  I am at that age where the “M” word is being bounded around in my circle of friends and colleagues. I think that I am peri-menopausal or “pre-menopausal” as I’m experiencing quite a few of the tell-tale signs so fore-warned is fore-armed, right?! 😉

I have decided that I want to share my own thoughts about the menopause and re-blog any articles that I find helpful or interesting here on my blog.

Today I am so excited, I found out that Neal’s Yard Remedies are running a workshop about the superfoods that are beneficial for women during the menopause. How fabulous is that!

The workshop is taking place later this year in their School of Natural Health in the beautiful Covent Garden shop (any excuse to visit Covent Garden, right).  I’ve copied the details below.

Perhaps I could ask my family to book me a place as a Mothers Day gift? 🙂

Slimming World | Week Three | January

I just wanted to share this. Trying to stick to an eating plan so that we reach our goal is tough, we know this – if it was easy everyone would be at their perfect weight! I’m certainly not!

But, it’s posts like this that not only inspire me to keep going but also prove that if I put in the effort I WILL be rewarded. I’m working towards a loss at next week’s Slimming World weigh in.

Thanks Sophie for sharing your weight loss journey with us!

Times Tables Back On The National Curriculum

Hello Everyone,

As some of you may already know, I work as a teaching assistant in a local primary school. My job is primarily to help those children who struggle, for whatever reason, and ensure that they are given every opportunity to achieve their educational potential.

I was distressed when I read an article written by a BBC analysis who suggests that it will take 50 years to close the achievement gap between England’s rich and poor pupils – you can read it here.

To help reduce the gap a UK Government times tables check is coming. From June 2020, all children in England will take an online timed times tables check at the end of Year 4. To find out more, you can access the National Curriculum for Maths on the Government’s Department for Education website here .

In our school, we use a variety of methods to help our children learn. One of the children’s favourite is the comprehensive online maths tool, Mathletics, which is full of educational tasks and fun games to help cement a child’s learning.

But I’ve also found these great resources that I want to share with you.

LEARN YOUR TIMES TABLES AS YOU PLAY

Times Square is a fun game by Oxford based company, ThinkNoodleGames . “Times Square is an exciting, cooperative maths card game that makes learning and practising times tables fast and fun. Team up, play together, and clear Times Square of Zombies!

12 TIMES TABLE TELLER – paper fortune teller

Sumbox Multiplication Square Educational Times Tables Maths Poster

  • Multi colour Multiplication Square
  • Times tables from 1 to 12
  • Numeracy vocabulary
  • Aids learning process

As with any skill or knowledge, frequent, short and repetitive are all key words when it comes to learning no matter what your age. 🙂

Weight Loss Wednesday – The @SlimmingWorld Way

Hello My Lovely Followers,

And here we are again another Weight Loss Wednesday. How was your week? Breaking the habits that I allowed to grow over the Christmas period is turning out to be harder than I expected. We’re almost at the end of January and I keep snacking!

My SW Consultant Carol and the gang came up with some really useful ideas to help with my snack-attack danger zone (the 3 hours when I come home from school until hubby & I eat our evening meal at 7pm) one of which was looking through my recipe books to get inspiration.

When our fridges, freezers and cupboards are packed full of food that excite us while keeping us on plan, it helps to make our weight loss journey less challenging.

“From hunger-busting main meals and delicious desserts to entertaining ideas and mouthwatering menus, you’ll find inspiration for every occasion.”

Below are all the books in my local group’s bookshop; we are able to flick through copies of these beautiful recipe books and helpful directories either before the group session or afterwards.

Slimming World’s Little Book of Soups Slimming World’s Little Book of Sauces Slimming World’s Little Book of Lunches Slimming World's Fakeaways Veggie DeluxeBest-loved Extra Easy Recipes Free Food Feasts Meals for One Curry Club Free & Easy Sweet DreamsSlimming World's Comfort Collection Slimming World's Little Book of MenusSlimming World's Eat More for LessTake 5 One for all

As you can see, Slimming World have a range of really useful and inspiring recipe books and the list is growing! Periodically throughout the year they offer one for free when you buy a 12-week countdown. I’ve seen a few copies of older Slimming World recipe books on Amazon too but they’re usually more expensive than the new ones my consultant has.

Slimming World Journal But it’s not just recipe books to inspire you, Slimming World have beautiful Journals to help you physically log your journey too which I used for the first 24 weeks. I think that having the journals really helped me; writing down what I was eating, what I was feeling, how often I was being active seemed to keep me focused and reduced the little lies we tell ourselves when on a “diet”.

That’s what I love about Slimming World they don’t expect you to go on your journey alone, they’re with you every step of the way.

So that’s it for this Weight Loss Wednesday, good luck and best wishes for your journey.

Bye for now x

Quality Family Time – Puzzle Love

Hello Everyone,

I hope that you’re enjoying the weekend. Child2 and I rekindled our love of jigsaw puzzles over the Christmas holidays. As she is now a teenager, the Peppa Pig and High School Musical puzzles that are in her room were distinctly beneath her so I’ve been having a look at more grown up ones.

Just look what I found from British company, Jigsaw Puzzle. Although I love the butterfly puzzle, we may have to work up to a 2000 piece like that as I’m not sure Child2 would have the patience. Lol!

Weight Loss Wednesday – My 2018 Fitbit Review

Hello My Lovely Followers,

And here we are again another Weight Loss Wednesday. How was your week? I think I forgot to tell you that I had a successful weigh in last Wednesday, I actually lost 2lbs! I don’t know how it happened but it definitely gave me a renewed sense of determination this week.

I got an e-mail from Fitbit this week “Your 2018 Year In Review and I thought I’d share it with you too. So I took a screenshot.

I can’t believe I took 3,034,601 steps last year! I know that I am a lot fitter than I was; I completed the NHS Couch to 5k program and was able to run for half an hour before my 5 week break during December. I am back on it again but have started at the week 5 stage to ease my body back into it. I don’t want to ache so much that I don’t ever want to run again.

I notice that there are NHS running podcasts available to download for graduates of the Couch to 5k program which I will definitely look into. My running goal is still to complete my local ParkRun (a 5k distance) faster than 35 minutes and I think I’d need to improve my speed and stamina to accomplish this.

Do you run? Have you tried a beginners running programme? I’d love to hear your thoughts. I’m still waiting for the running bug to bite – apparently, friends warned me that once I start running, the adrenaline and freedom it gives will mean I get addicted to running.

That hasn’t happened …. yet. Lol!
